As part of Nottinghamshire County Council's drive to improve its internal communications, the IT and Corporate Communications departments have been reviewing and restructuring their Intranet. Based on research and discussion with staff members, they looked to deliver a more user-focused Intranet, but had no experience with interface design. With thousands of staff members with varying levels of Internet experience, a well-developed Intranet needs to provide important information and also be efficient, easy-to-use, accessible, and engage users – giving staff members a system that delivers a balance between the Council's requirements and the user's needs.

With those objectives in mind, Senior Internet has been helping the Council develop an Intranet that meets the above requirements and the necessary government standards. Working with the IT and Corporate Communications departments, Senior is providing consultancy on the Intranet's design – focusing on the usability of the interface as well as a professional graphic design.

Basing the work on the initial user focus group research implemented by the Council, the Nielsen-Norman Group Intranet research findings, and the BBC's Glass Wall design research, as well as regular usability testing using a number of personas, Senior is providing graphics-based mock-up designs, illustrating how the home page and internal pages will look on the Intranet. HTML guidelines, built to strict Priority 3 AAA accessibility guidelines, will be provided along with CSS stylesheets, giving the Council a complete toolkit with which to build their Intranet.
